Pathway was founded in 1991 to provide institutional investors with investment management services in the private market asset class. Douglas Le Bon and James Reinhardt—who founded the private equity division at Wilshire Associates in 1983 and in so doing were among the first to offer private market investment services to institutional investors—established Pathway as an independent firm. Karen Jakobi and Albert Clerc, former Wilshire employees, joined Messrs. Le Bon and Reinhardt to form Pathway. Since then, the ownership of the firm has grown from the four founders (three of whom work full-time in the business today) to 22 senior professionals, who own 100% of the business and who have an average of 21 years of experience at Pathway and 24 years of private market experience overall.

Since the firm’s inception, Pathway’s investment professionals have participated in the development of more than 115 private market portfolios, committing more than $105bn to more than 1,150 investments across a wide variety of private market strategies through various market cycles. As of December 31, 2024, Pathway manages more than $93bn on behalf of some of the largest corporate and public pension plans, government entities, and financial institutions in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.
